Massive avalanche hits Nathu La in Sikkim

7 dead

GUWAHATI, India April 4 - A massive avalanche killed seven tourists in Indias Himalayan state of Sikkim near a mountain pass to the Chinese region of Tibet, an army spokesman said on Tuesday.

The tourists were part of a group of 17 who were trekking near the picturesque Nathu La pass when the avalanche struck, said Lt. Col. J.S. Bhalla, a spokesman for the Indian Army's 17th Mountain Division.

The avalanche occurred at an altitude of about 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) and swept away 12 of the tourists, Bhalla said. Five of the tourists were rescued alive, but two of them later died in a hospital, he said. The bodies of the seven dead tourists have been recovered, Bhalla said.

The tourists were from different parts of India, including the states of West Bengal, Assam, and Maharashtra, Bhalla said. The cause of the avalanche is being investigated, he said.

Conclusion:

The avalanche is a reminder of the dangers of trekking in the Himalayas, even during the summer months. The mountains are prone to avalanches, and tourists should be aware of the risks before they set out on a trek. If you are planning to trek in the Himalayas, be sure to do your research and take all necessary precautions.
