The Belgian Flag: A Symbol of National Pride

A History of the Belgian Flag

The current design of the Belgian flag was officially adopted on January 23, 1831, just months after the Belgian Revolution, which led to the country's independence from the Netherlands. The design is based on the flag of the Brabant Revolution of 1789.

The flag is a vertical tricolor, with equal bands of black, yellow, and red. The black band represents strength and resilience, the yellow band represents wealth and prosperity, and the red band represents courage and sacrifice.

The colors of the Belgian flag are also found on the flags of other European countries, including Germany, France, and the Netherlands. This is because these countries were all part of the Holy Roman Empire at one time or another.

The Flag's Design

The Belgian flag is a vertical tricolor with equal bands of black, yellow, and red. The black band is on the hoist side, the yellow band is in the middle, and the red band is on the fly side.

The width-to-length ratio of the flag is 13:15. The flag is flown from buildings and poles throughout Belgium, and it is also used as the national ensign on Belgian ships.
