Sanders Vows to Fight for Economic Justice
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Bernie Sanders, a U.S. Senator from Vermont, announced on Tuesday that he will run for President of the United States in 2020.
Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, is known for his progressive views on economic inequality, healthcare, and environmental protection.
"We are building a movement to transform our economy to one that works for all of us and not just the one percent,"Sanders said in a statement.
Sanders has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and his policies. He has also been a strong advocate for Medicare for All, a single-payer healthcare system that would provide health insurance to all Americans.
Sanders' announcement was met with mixed reactions. Some Democrats welcomed his entry into the race, while others expressed concerns about his electability.
A recent poll by the Pew Research Center found that Sanders is the most popular Democratic presidential candidate among young people. However, he also has the highest unfavorable rating of any of the leading candidates.
Sanders is expected to face a crowded field of Democratic challengers, including former Vice President Joe Biden, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, and South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
